Statement:
What’s the harm in signing over your soul for the sake of love if you don’t believe in hell, or if you do, you’ll be going there anyway for kissing boys?
Biography:
Hernan Bas finds inspiration in youth and goth culture, fashion layouts and books for boys—the Hardy Boys and Boy Scout manuals—as well as Moby-Dick and the film Carrie. In his paintings and installations he retells these stories about male bonding, adventure and dreaming about other places and ways to be. His works, filled with homoerotic delight and confined by fanciful etiquette, allude to darker sentiments. Their posed innocence is but a thin veil of gentlemanly decorum. Hernan Bas, born in 1978, lives and works in Miami. He has had solo exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (2009), Rubell Family Collection (2007), The Moore Space, Miami (2004) and The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (2002). Bas' work has also been exhibited in The Collectors, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset, Nordic and Danish Pavilions, Venice Biennale (2009), Busan Biennale, Korea (2008), Aspen Art Museum (2007), Schirn Kunsthalle (2005) and Whitney Biennial (2004).
